Hugh Crosgrove, 1838-1922

Hugh enlisted on August 22, 1862 at Westfield, N.Y. in Company E of the 154th Infantry Regiment of the New York Volunteers, and was mustered in as a private on September 24, 1862 at Jamestown, Chautauqua County, N.Y.   He fought in the battles of Chancellorsville, Va., Gettysburg, Penn., and Chattanooga, Tenn.   On May 4, 1864, while the regiment was camped at Lookout Valley, Georgia, Hugh was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.   After other battles in Georgia, the regiment reached Savannah, Ga., where Hugh was hospitalized on January 23, 1865, for 2 1/2 to 3 months for "ague", or a malarial fever.   The war ended in April 1865, and Hugh was discharged from service on June 11, 1865 near Bladensburg, Prince Georges County, Maryland.
